Can Milk Cause Acne

Updated 2017-04-02 – So, can milk cause acne? Most people are aware by now that their diet can cause acne, but dairy products? Well, below we highlight some important information from the latest research done by the American Academy of Dermatology.

There was a time when most people believed that acne was simply caused by lots of chocolate and greasy food, however, that has long been proven wrong. It has now been proven that a major cause of acne can be linked towards hormonal fluctuations and genetics which means for many, they will experience acne outbreaks during puberty, pregnancy and menopause.

Can Milk Cause Acne? The Research

However, more recent research has proven that a few exceptions involving dairy products come into play. Approx fifty thousand people were monitored, specifically their habits and diets during their attendance in high school. Those who drank between 2-3 cups of milk per day were 22% more prone to acne outbreaks, as opposed to those that only drank one cup a week or less.

Not only that, it was determined that skim milk was the worse of the dairy product offenders. Cream and cottage cheese came in as high offenders as well. Other researches performed regarding the effect of hormones on milk has proved similar results.

It’s important to know that food containing iodides (soy sauce, shellfish, etc.) also tend to increase one’s chance of acne. It seems that Iodides play a big role in the inflammation which has been confirmed by Dr Berson, who was an assistant professor of dermatology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University at the time of this research.

So the answer to the question “Can Dairy Products Influence Acne Outbreaks?” is a resounding Yes. And for some, the outbreaks of acne can be quite intense. However, there are things that you can do to avoid the outbreaks. Regardless of who you are (person in the teens or in their 50s, man or woman, etc.) … there are some daily steps that you can take to get back to having clear skin.

The first thing that we recommend is for you to keep a journal. In our opinion, it is extremely important that you track the food that you eat, how it makes you feel afterwards and also track the progress of your acne outbreaks. Preferably, take pictures throughout the process. After a while, you should notice what foods exacerbate the problem more than others.

  1. Great tip about using a journal… That’s how I was able to figure out what foods were making me break out last year. πŸ™‚

  2. Haven’t had any major problems with dairy products. For me, my acne problems flare up when I have too much sugar. πŸ™

    1. Hi Julie. Yes, unfortunately sugar is the cause for many people’s acne and sometimes a tough one to beat especially if you have a sweet tooth. The only real trick is to limit it as much as possible now that you know that it’s a trigger.
